she flew away
while I shielded my eyes

Away, over the roof of my home
over the power lines

I grew afraid
but not her

She was brave

The neighborhood children
screamed and they jumped
up too, not even minding
that their ice cream cones
could fall and smash onto
the ground

They hollered and cheered,
for her to go
but I was too frightened
to see where she’d go

As if there ever was
any doubt

That she would gallop
towards the heavens
jousting; reaching, higher
and higher; closing ranks
amongst the bullying clouds,
heading towards the rays
of the sun
