Into the Night

I imagine you as a silent figure …
Trench coat and fedora in the rain on a dimly lit street …

A single lamp …
Light reflecting on wet pavement …
Daschiel Hammett and film noire …

I creep close …
Silent as well …

Pulling my own coat tight around me …
There is damp night air …
Its chill strikes at the bones …

We just stand …
Side by side …
There in the night …

A full moon sits in a quiet sky …
There are no stars …

Danger sits just beyond the corner …
As life would have it …
Beyond the touch of the lonely street lamp …

But I breathe deep of the cool night air …
And feel only peace …

Your silent figure has stood here so long …
Such a strange place to make a home …
Out here in the dark …
Where the rain steals away all memories …

And I cannot speak …
But yet I may touch …
Our hands are very near …

The storm has passed …
See how wet ground yields to warmer air …
And our hands are very near …

I imagine you on that street …
But I could not so dream …
Except that I stand there myself …

That self same lamp …
Dim guardian and guide …
I shelter in its wake …
Just the same …

And watch the moon as it rises high …

Hands so near may touch …
In this place with no name …

Hands so near do touch …
Do hold …
Hold tight …
